Women Talk, Men Don't

"Honey,let's talk" may be the least favorite thing that a husband likes to hear from his wife. Those words can create quite a bit of anxiety in a husband. Perhaps its because women need to talk so much more than men that seldom will a husband approach his wife needing to talk. Research has shown that in general, women have stronger language skills than men. This difference can create some heavy conflict in a marriage! Because this gender difference can create so many misunderstandings, there can be a lot of anger and frustration - for both a husband and a wife. Research has shown us that males are unlike females in the way that they express themselves. Most little boys talk later and less than their little girl counterparts. As boys grow up they will still have less need to talk. Throughout their lives, boys and girls - men and women - differ greatly in the area of communication. Of course there are exceptions - some men will talk a lot and some women are very quiet. But generally women have a need in a relationship to talk more than men. As a marriage counselor, I have many more women complain that their husbands won't talk than I have men saying that about their wives. This basic gender difference can lead to some complicated problems in marriage. If you are an emotional and verbal wife and you are married to a strong, silent husband - I'm speaking your language! Working out your needs and your differences requires lots of thoughtful compromise. Yes, you boys and girls can get along! It does require patience, and understanding -and perhaps a pretty good dose of forgiveness. Boys can't help being who they are, and neither can girls. Boys turn into men and husbands, as girls grow into women and wives. Their innate differences are what make both genders be attracted to each other. But the differences can create some unattractive behaviors, if they aren't aware, educated, and caring about how different they are. It's okay to be different. And it's okay to accept that guys won't think, act or talk like gals. It sure will make married life much more pleasant too.
