Thanksgiving, Holidays and Family Traditions

11/24/2008

Family traditions abound on holidays!  We work extra hard to spend time with our family and friends, that we care for during this season. And really, when you think about it, that is really the purpose of special traditional celebrations like Thanksgiving. To be with family, to see friends, to enjoy our closest relationships. Oh, you mean it’s not about watching football games?! Did you think it was just about pumpkin pie and turkey? Well, of course those things are part of the rituals of celebrating traditions in families. However, the true meaning and purpose of our holidays are usually rooted in something a little more profound. Thanksgiving is an excellent time for increase the bonding of your family members. When grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all get together during these special days, this is the perfect event to celebrate- YOUR family. So as you go about your holiday plans, talk with your children about the importance of being part of a family. You will want to recognize the significance of sharing a meal with your children’s grandparents. Thanksgiving is an excellent time to teach your children about being grateful - for family. And for those of you whose families have been hurt by death or divorce or destructive behaviors, may God bless you now and in the years to come with support and care from those in the family of God. We can be so thankful that God provided us a church family, as a home where all of us are welcome.
