School Routine Begins Soon

8/14/2008

Summer is usually a real break in routine for families. Things are little more relaxed and less stressful, and getting back into routine can be a big change. But  getting back into a school mode doesn't have to be stressful. And while mornings can start slower and the controlled chaos isn't as big a problem during vacation time, searching for socks and forgetting lunch during the school year can create --- well, just a little bit of stress. You may want to think about spending a little bit of time getting the family ready for routine again. That way it won't be such a disturbing surprise when school begins in a few weeks. One way to do that is to make breakfast time special. Child experts tell us that a family breakfast is a great way for a child to begin their day. Nutritionally, kids need a good meal before school. And creating special happy mornings can be just as an important start to a kids' day. Find out what your kids really will eat - bagels, or muffins, or a favorite cereal.  Let your kids take turns choosing the morning menu. Get them involved and help them to be eager about starting their day right. The consistent routine of eating breakfast together as a family can help reduce the frantic beginnings that a lack of routine can create. A cup of hot chocolate and a warm hug accompanied with a smile of "Good Morning!" can make the beginning of your child's day something he'll look forward to. And a great de-stressor for everyone!
