Summer is here! And while there is vacation and camp and staying up late... parents often are concerned about helping kids not forget school - while kids are busy trying to "forget school". Summer is for fun and relaxing and family time. Right? Well sure, but one thing is for certain, school will begin again and all parents want their kids to be ready when it does. How do you help your kids stay ready? How can you motivate your child to read - or study that math while it is still summer? One way is to keep the work time-limited. All of us get bored when a routine task takes a long time. So give your child just five math problems to work in a day. Or say, "You can watch that movie right after you read one chapter in your book." And give rewards - when they finish a book, or complete a work book section.Offer as rewards activities to choose from - like a trip to the skating rink or bowling or fishing. Hey, just realize that reading and studying is probably never going to be something your child just volunteers or loves to do ( at least if they're just regular kids) - but you can add an element of fun and excitement by giving prizes or by making a game or a competition out of it. Set up a point scale for the number of assignments completed or books that they read. Give allowance or rewards based on their performance! Kids love competition -- and teachers use this technique all of the time. Because - It works! The trick is to balance the learning - during and after the work- with some fun! You remember school?? That's what recess was for!
