Encouraging Your Children

2/10/2008

Homes that truly have a heart - Homes where love is spoken often. Are homes where encouraging words are the normal language! Loving homes are ones that build up each family member. I Thessalonians 5:11 teaches this principle. That verse says that we are to encourage one another and build each other up. And then in Colossians 3:21, we have a teaching there that says fathers should not discourage or - “embitter”  - their children. The Message says it this way: “Parents, don’t come down too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits.”  And The New Living Version says “Fathers, do not be so hard on your children that they will give up trying to do what is right.” I admit - it is a difficult to balance disciplining and correcting our children and still maintain a relationship that encourages them.

A good way to do this is: To tell your child what your expectations are. Be very clear. Let him know the boundaries of acceptable behavior. And then, give fair and consistent consequences when those boundaries are crossed. Our children depend on us as the parent-leaders in their lives to teach and train them. Let's do it in a way that will encourage them to be the best they can be.
