Amen! Babies and Faith

5/2/2008

After church last Sunday, a big, tough-looking man approached me. I wasn't alarmed though, because he is one of the sweetest daddies that I know. He carried in his arms, his two- year- old and was eager to show me something. He said, "Watch this." He asked his curly, blond-haired baby girl, "Honey, what do we do when we say our prayers at night?" She bowed her sweet little head, cupped her two hands together and then jerked her head up saying loudly -"AMEN!"

"We've been working really hard on that, " he told me. Good job, Dad!       When I have parents ask me: when should we start having devotions with our kids? My answer is whenever you are ready! It is never too early to start teaching your children the spiritual behaviors that help them focus on God. This dad knows that helping his little girl learn to pray will give him a place to start when he begins teaching her important lessons about Jesus. And parents, the best devotions in the world won't ever replace the lessons that you teach by example. If worshipping God is important to you - and your children see that on a regular basis, they are learning that studying God's Word, praying and be active in a church are vital to the life of a Christian. Do I hear a loud "Amen" to that!?
