What's Right When It's Wrong?

9/17/2008

Do your kids know how to do right things when things go wrong? The Davidson’s ten year-old son was upset after he spent the night at a new friend’s house. He told his mom and dad that the movie he saw while he was visiting was not one that was allowed in their home. He said, “I didn’t know what to do. I turned my head away in the bad parts. I wanted to leave the room, but I was afraid that would be rude. And besides my friend’s parents were watching it with us!” The Davidson’s really didn’t know what they could do about what had happened.  The didn't want to upset their son and they sure didn't want to get into a big argument with the parents of their son's friends. So, they started by discussing with their son and his sisters how to handle awkward situations in the future. Their son suggested that next time he could ask if it would be okay if he could find something else to do while everyone else watched the movie. And it would be okay to say in a nice way, that he wasn’t allowed to watch that movie at home. And then the parents told the kids that if they ever felt pressured to do something wrong or if they felt uncomfortable to call home and they would come get them. Children can learn how to make wise decisions if Mom and Dad will teach them.

How simple, yet how profound. Life would be so different if we would take the time to roll play different situations with our kids and grandkids.
How would our lives be different if our father Adam had done that?
