Praying and Staying...Married

A mature, married friend told me the other day the major influencing factor in her healthy and very happy relationship with her husband. She said if she were to share with a young couple the secret for a successful marriage, it would be to pray together. Years ago, Dr. James Dobson asked 600 married people to sit on a panel and to give candid direction to the younger generation about the methods that had worked to make their marriages successful. Overwhelmingly the very basic recommendation repeated by these mature folks encouraged newlyweds to establish and maintain a Christ-centered home. Without a doubt, the experienced panel of everyday people told the young people listening, if a young husband and wife are deeply committed to Jesus Christ, their marriage has an enormous advantage in dealing with challenges to their relationship. Dr. Dobson also said that he believes the most stabilizing factor in his marriage is the prayer life that he and his wife, Shirley, share. It is very difficult for young couples to stay committed in the culture we currently live in. However, with God at the center, it will be very possible for our young people to be courageous and committed to their marriages.  A happy, satisfying and long-lasting marriage than is not just about staying… it is also about praying.
