Important -- Stuff?

4/30/2009

How did you learn about what was really important in life? Perhaps you grew up in a family where important value was placed on people and relationships. Or maybe not. Your parents may not have shown you what to really cherish in life. And now, you don’t want to raise your kids that way. So many things are given to children today that they are often overwhelmed with them. Kids will sit in a home full of toys, gadgets, and gizmos that were purchased just for them and say, “Mom! I’m bored!” I’ve found that kids may be the most old-fashioned people in the world. For awhile, they may be gluttons for the newest video game, or fancy toy. But NOTHING replaces enjoying attention and time spent with the people that they love. Even in the twenty-first century with all of the modern world’s imagination turning out new ways to stimulate and excite our quest for entertainment, a child would really like nothing better than for his mom, her dad, or his grand parents to spend time with them -  playing, reading, fishing or biking with them. There are plenty of messed-up adults today who had everyTHING that they wanted as children --- but not much of what they needed. If things seem to consume you and your children’s lives, why don’t you shut down that crazy lifestyle and get back to what really matters. You and your kids spending time - loving each other.

I throughly believe in what you are saying!!  I am a former First grade teacher , working now with the AL State Dept. of Ed. in the Mentoring Program.  I  witness daily the truth of what you wrote and pray that your ministry WILL make that difference in the life of "the child"..to value people.  I have often told parents that children spell "Love"....time!
