Have You Figured Out Parenting Yet?
7/31/2009
Mrs. Dawson was worried about little Abby who was in her 3rd grade classroom. Abby was so smart – straight A’s on her last report card, but Abby wasn’t doing well in behavior. Mrs. Dawson had a conference with Abby’s parents and she told them, sometimes Abby can be rude. She speaks without thinking, and she hurts other people’s feelings. Well, her mom and dad were fully aware of Abby’s abrasive ways, but confused as to what to do about it. Mrs. Dawson had a few questions for them:
Do you have problems with Abby obeying you? Does she talk disrespectfully to you her parents? Abby’s parents embarrassed, had to admit yes to both.
Mrs. Dawson had a suggestion. She told them to talk to a family counselor, because it looked like 8 year old Abby didn’t even understand the importance of showing for respect for anyone – including her parents and other authority figures. Scriptures tell us that parents are to teach their children to obey. Many parents really don’t yet have it figured out how they are to do that. They may punish or do things like scream, beg or be sarcastic in attempts to correct their children. If you haven’t figured it out parents, I suggest like Mrs. Dawson that you study a parenting book or talk to a Christian family counselor. Your child depends on you to figure this parenting thing out.
