Grandkids - Nothing Like It!

A hundred years ago, when folks just didn’t live as long as they do now, children might not have known their grandparents but for a few years. Today, grandchildren often know their grandparents throughout their childhood and even into their adult lives. Many grandparents today are active and involved even in their great-grandchildren’s lives. My children’s grandmother, my mother, is expecting her 18th great-grandchild. In fact that baby will be my first grandchild. My friends who are already grandparents keep assuring me that there has been nothing in my life that will compare with the joy of being a grandparent. Although I am still several months away from knowing that firsthand, I really do believe them. As a family member and a family therapist, I have seen and known how intensely grandmothers and grandfathers feel about their grandkids. And I have seen how important this relationship is for children. Children thrive under their unconditional love. Grandkids and grandparents share a special kind of love… and almost a pressure-free relationship. This is so healthy for a child. I can’t wait to know and feel this kind of unconditional and irrational love for my own grandchild one day soon. And to know the true blessing of enjoying my own child’s child. I do hear there is nothing like it.
