Cell Phones and Six Year Olds

I was so excited! I’d been waiting months for it. Now finally I had it. The newest touch screen phone with email, camera,  and music. I’d been saving for it and waiting for my service contract to expire.  I had planned for it knowing this would be a really big help to me in my work. I couldn’t help but be very happy that I had it now. And then --, I was approached by a tiny six-year old wanting to show me her I-Phone! What in the world was SHE doing with that expensive work phone? Let me ask: Do your kids need a cellphone? If your 8 year old needs one to contact you in an emergency may be so. But most of the kids I see with them, aren’t using them for emergencies.Why? Is it just to be cool? To keep up with other kids? Is it vanity? And did your child BEG you for it? Just what does your child have to do to earn privileges like a phone, a video game- or a car? If your child is begging for one of those things, please consider what you are encouraging in your child’s behavior when you just give them things. There’s just something to be said for the satisfaction of waiting and working for things that you want.
